Ahh Belize...

This morning I decided to make myself a coffee here at home with my handy dandy mini Bodum coffee press.  The Egg & Fixit Man prefers coffee from Tim's but he had to work today so I am trying to perfect  my Boduming. I learned that when using a Bodum coffee press, it is important to let the boiling water sit for a minute before pouring it over the coffee so as not to burn the coffee.  It is also important to use fresh coffee beans which I don't have.  So I used what I had, a blend of Maxwell house and what was left of the coffee we brought back from Belize .  Ahh Belize...what a wonderful place.  We went their on our honeymoon last summer.  The Mayans and  Garifuna people were so welcoming we felt at home as soon as we landed. Our stay at Jaguar Reef Lodge was amazing.  Just looking at their website makes me feel strangely homesick. Belize is a definite place to go if you want to stray off the beaten path.  I would go again in a pinch if their weren't so many other places to see in this world.

p.s.   My coffee turned out okay -  still a work in progress - must get fresh beans...

Just like Mama used to make...

I was taught never to waste your food so I made soup from that wonderful chicken we had last week. At those prices you bet I got my monies worth.  Don't get me wrong, it was well worth it but it is sure expensive to eat healthy, but that is a whole other topic.  Back to the soup, or stoup (soup+stew) as it turned out.  The weather was crappy and in need of some comfort food, I decided to make dumplings to go with the stoup "just like Mama used to make", so I called my Mom from Food Basics . We decided that it would be best to use Bisquick for my virgin voyage into dumplingdom.  My Mom knows everything.  But what if you don't have a Mom to call or even the time or desire to "google it"? That is how Go Ask Gabi was born.  I may not have all the answers but I can always call my Mom.

P.s.  the dumplings turned out fabulous...Thanks Mom!

It's a beautiful day damit!

My great Uncle Paul used to make a mean breakfast of bacon & eggs and when it was ready he would call out to wake everyone up by saying..."It's a beautiful day damit, everyone get up"  Needless to say that saying has carried on in my family and it  is a beautiful day today (damit)
My hubby (the egg & fixit man) happens to be an excellent cook & made us an awesome breakfast with the farm fresh eggs & bacon we bought yesterday. The bacon came from Vic's Meats on Mountain Rd. in Grimsby.  Much better bacon than what we have been getting from their sister store  Vic's Meats on Main Street but still a little too salty for my taste. The best bacon in town used to come from Vic's but we found better at the Country Meat Market on hwy #8 in Winona.   We discovered this tasty treat at Clausen's Diner.  You'd miss Clausen's  if you blinked because it is tucked in beside a variety store but check it out.  It is like stepping in to a time warp taking you back to the 70's but the food is good, well priced & family friendly.
Speaking of bacon - has anyone ever had a bacon brownie ?

Go with what you know

What's new?   A good friend once told me. "Go with what you know"
So I am going to start with Grimsby.

Today started at "Our Gate to Your Plate" got ourselves a dozen free range eggs & the very last free range chicken.  We've had the eggs before which are the richest, bestist most yellowist yolks you have ever tasted.
Can't wait to feast on the chicken tomorrow night!
